For many years, I watched TV world news, and I saw throngs of people, thousands, maybe millions, in the streets of various countries around the world, chanting, carrying signs, throwing rocks and bottles or whatever they could find, protesting this or that (usually their own government). I thought to myself, "How do these people live? Don't they have to work? How do they feed themselves? Why do they remind me of a chimpanzee attack on a video by Jane Goodall?
I never dreamed these things could happen in my country. Even the civil rights protests of the sixties, or the anti-war protests during the Vietnam conflict, were reasonably civilized. Yes, police used water cannons and dogs and tear gas on occasion, but the crowds themselves were largely peaceful.
Our country has experienced some riots, usually over racism, or the perception of racism, but those were mostly confined to one city where things got out of hand. The controversy over Rodney King's beating by police was significant, but it was still largely a local issue.
Due to the influence and availability of social media over the internet, these events are no longer local in scope. People who never heard of Jacob Blake or George Floyd or several other persons who became the impetus for demonstrations against racial injustice are in the streets supporting people they know little or nothing about other than the color of their skin. The speed at which rumors, inuendos, and accusations can reach the entire country has made the truth irrelevant.
The truth is that most of those whose names are chanted by the mobs were criminal scumbags that were bound to end up in prison or killed by police at some point. The only question is whether or not they deserved to die for the offense for which they were stopped by police, and whether their own actions contributed to their deaths. The answer to the first part of the question is often no, but the answer to the second part of the question is almost always yes.
I just watched a video today of a recent traffic stop. Police pulled over a car full of black men because they were driving at night without any headlights. When approached by the officer, the driver was told to please put his hands on the steering wheel. Then, the officer spotted the butt of a gun near the driver's waist. He said, "If you reach for that gun, you're going to get shot. Is that a gun in your waist band?" The driver immediately made a quick move with both hands toward the gun he was carrying. I can't believe the officer didn't shoot him on the spot, but he refrained, probably for fear his career would be over if he shot this man, even if it was justified. That is the world we live in today. As it turned out, police recovered three stolen guns from the car and arrested two of the passengers who admitted "owning" them.
I'm using this post to warn anyone reading that there is going to be a civil war in this country soon. It may have already started, but it will definitely start as soon as the election is over no matter who wins. Get yourselves some guns, some ammunition, stocks for survival when the whole fucking system crashes, and start learning about how to grow food, purify water, create a shelter with tools and materials available, because life as we've known it is over come November fourth, 2020.
